The Conservative government appear determined to lock the UK in to the energy infrastructure of the past.
Wednesday’s budget included a completely underhand move expanding the Climate Change Levy to renewables, combined with further tax breaks for fossil fuels. More on this here from the Campaign Against Climate Change- http://www.campaigncc.org/emergencybudget & here from Friends of the Earth – http://www.foe.co.uk/blog/like-making-apple-juice-pay-alcohol-tax-clean-energy-faces-carbon-tax
Alongside a continued push for fracking, despite widespread public opposition, the Conservatives have changed planning laws to make it more difficult if not impossible to build new onshore wind – http://www.campaigncc.org/fracking_wind_local_democracy
And they’ve announced that the zero carbon homes policy will be scrapped – http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/10/uk-scraps-zero-carbon-home-target
And then there’s the drive to expand Heathrow.
All of these policies take us backwards from a climate perspective.
And they don’t stack up economically either.
George Osborne doesn’t seem to have heard of green growth.
Perhaps he needs to read the Campaign Against Climate Change’s One Million Climate Jobs report, for example – http://www.climate-change-jobs.org/
What can we do?
Write to your MP to let them know how misguided these policy developments are and to ask them what they will do to help get us on the right track towards a low-carbon future.
