I’m VERY interested in the overlap of art/culture and democratic empowerment at the moment. What better time to be working on this than in this election year?

A constellation of things happening on this front in the next few months –

Occupy Democracy are back at Parliament Square.

Then there’s this at Cambridge Junction on the 19th Feb – http://www.junction.co.uk/arts-culture-and-quality-of-life-the-political-debate

25th Feb is the 50 year anniversary of Jennie Lee’s radical white paper on the importance of the arts all over the UK (not just London). Stella Duffy is galvanising action on this – http://www.devotedanddisgruntled.com/events/devoted-and-disgruntled-10-what-are-we-going-do-ab/reports/this-year-is-the-50th-anniversary-of-jennie-lees-w/

Henry Benedict Tam’s ‘Question the Powerful’ workshop are happening in East Anglia in Feb, March and April (Cambridge on the 28th Feb) – http://eastern.wea.org.uk/wea-news/news/2015/01/07/politics-what-is-it-good-for/

– These two quotes:

“Each of the great social achievements of recent decades has come about not because of government proclamations, but because people organized, made demands, and made it good politics for governments to respond. It is the political will of the people that makes and sustains the political will of governments.” James Grant, Former Executive Director of UNICEF

“The important people are the countless unknowns who create the basis from which the great moments of history arise.” Howard Zinn
