Chimerica

“Tiananmen Square, 1989. As tanks roll through Beijing and soldiers hammer on his hotel door, Joe – a young American photojournalist – captures a piece of history”

I admire the ambition of Lucy Kirkwood’s’s Chimerica which, with this photo as its inspiration

Tianasquare

takes the the last 20-something years of relations between China and America as it’s theme.

Who was the tank man? is the question at the heart of the plot. It’s a detective story that just about hangs together, and the pace and confidence of the presentation, a revolving cube set and Headlong’s usual impressive stage management don’t give us much time to ask questions.
